Ingredients

8 cups of cubed day-old bread (French or sourdough works best)

2 cups diced cooked ham

2 cups shredded Swiss cheese

1 cup whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

6 large eggs

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard for a subtle kick

1 teaspoon dried thyme (or 2 teaspoons if using fresh thyme)

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons butter (for greasing the baking dish)

Chopped fresh chives or parsley for optional garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Generously grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter, ensuring all the surfaces are well-coated to prevent sticking.

Layer the Ingredients: In the greased baking dish, evenly distribute half of the cubed bread at the bottom. Follow this with half of the diced ham and then sprinkle half of the shredded Swiss cheese on top. Repeat this layering with the remaining bread, ham, and cheese to create a second layer.

Mix the Custard: In a large mixing bowl, add the eggs, milk, heavy cream, Dijon mustard, dried thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, along with salt and pepper. Whisk together until all ingredients are fully combined and the mixture is smooth.

Combine: Carefully pour the custard mixture over the layered bread, ham, and cheese. Using a spatula, gently press down on the bread to submerge it fully in the custard, ensuring even soaking.

Let It Rest: Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Place it in the refrigerator to rest for at least 30 minutes, allowing the bread to absorb the custard fully. For best results, you can let it sit overnight.

Bake: When ready to bake, remove the cover from the dish and place it in the preheated oven. Bake for 45-55 minutes or until the top turns golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Garnish and Serve: Once baked, allow the strata to cool for a few minutes. For an appealing finish, garnish with chopped fresh chives or parsley if desired. Cut into squares and serve warm, complemented by fresh fruits or a side of mixed green salad for a delightful breakfast or brunch experience.
