Ingredients

1 pound sweet Italian sausage

1 medium onion, finely diced

2 cups fresh apples, peeled and diced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp are excellent choices)

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

8 ounces refrigerated biscuit dough, cut into quarters

4 large eggs

2 cups milk

1/4 cup pure maple syrup

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste

Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a 9x13 inch baking dish by greasing it generously with non-stick cooking spray.

Cook the Sausage: In a large skillet, heat over medium flame. Add the sweet Italian sausage and cook until it’s browned and crumbly, approximately 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add in the diced onion, continuing to cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until the onions become soft and translucent.

Incorporate Apples and Spices: Stir in the peeled and diced apples along with the ground cinnamon and nutmeg. Cook the mixture for another 3 minutes, allowing the apples to soften slightly. Season with salt and pepper to taste, then remove the skillet from heat.

Whisk the Egg Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, vigorously whisk together the eggs, milk, and maple syrup until everything is well incorporated and smooth.

Layer the Casserole: Evenly distribute the cooked sausage, apple, and onion mixture across the bottom of the greased baking dish. Next, scatter the quartered biscuit dough pieces over the top of the sausage mixture. Gently pour the egg mixture over all layers, ensuring the biscuit pieces are soaked well. Finally, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the casserole.

Bake to Perfection: Place the assembled casserole in the preheated oven. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the egg is fully set, and the biscuit pieces are puffed and golden brown on top.

Cool and Serve Warm: Allow the casserole to cool for approximately 5 minutes after removing it from the oven. Slice into squares, garnish with fresh parsley if desired, and serve while warm for the best flavor experience.
